A New Roadside Presence

American Legion Buckeye Boys State Highway Patrol (ALBBSHP) cadets were sworn in at 1 p.m. on Wednesday at Millett Hall.

Many cadets stated that they joined the ALBBSHP because of their interest in helping people through a career in law enforcement or the military.

“My drum instructor at my high school is part of the police force, and I’ve been interested in police work as a future career. This was the closest opportunity I had to pursue that interest,” Cadet Colin Preusser, of Ridenour City, said.

Although not all applicants were accepted, those who were accepted were ecstatic. According to cadet Ben Hannawald, “I was very excited knowing 60 people took the test, and only 30 of them got in. And I was one of the 30.”

This means that only 50% of test takers were accepted into the program. Despite the odds, these 30 individuals rose above the competition and succeeded.

Many cadets had different expectations of what their role would involve, but none fully understood what it would entail. They were surprised to learn the full scope of their duties, though most were satisfied with what they discovered.

Although the experience was more demanding and different from what they had expected, the cadets embraced the challenge with enthusiasm.
