Does Debate Sway Voting?

The county debate is a popular outlet for upcoming state and gubernatorial candidates to show off their charismatic expertise and win delegate votes for their position. The most anticipated is the debate for governor, which is between Nicholas (Nikki) Jensvold, of Pennell City, and Charles (Chuck) Bosler, of Chapman City, this year.

Although the debate naturally sways delegates opinions, many offer that the county debate makes no difference in the overall outcome of the election. Delegates may still stay firm in their predecided vote and withhold themselves from being persuaded.

Despite this opinion, many delegates experience a change of heart regarding their vote and fall for either candidate because of their debate skills and crowd work.

Prior to the debate many delegates seemed quite uncertain between their proposed candidates. A common strategy amongst delegates who are uncertain is simply to vote along party lines, while others try to vote for recent friends, especially those that they know within their own city.

However, some think they have already selected their candidates. Kevin Houser, a delegate from Schuck city, ran with his city’s motto, “Schuck for Chuck” and confident in his decision entered, then leaving woefully surprised.

Due to Nikki’s superior ability in public speaking, and their, “great arguments,” Kevin changed his vote despite pressure from his Chuck-favored city. He added that he was surprised because Chuck “threw” in regards to his speech capabilities allowing Nikki to capture his support.

Multiple other delegates offered that they switched their vote from Chuck to Nikki because of their use of crowd work and quick witted responses. Though still, many others remained unfazed, keeping undecided in their vote.

Despite contrary sentiment, overall, this county debate serves as a popular catalyst for change among delegate ideation and works to change delegate voting behavior.
