Koppin County Delegate Nominates Self at County Caucus to Promote Gubernatorial Run

On Monday, the counties throughout Buckeye Boys State held their annual county caucuses. In Koppin County, Federalist City Secretary Nicholas Jensvold from Pennell, put valuable hours of campaigning time on the line to promote his gubernatorial run to his entire county by nominating himself for the position of County Chairman. 

His speech asked his fellow delegates to vote for him in the upcoming gubernatorial race, simultaneously discouraging those present from voting for him as the County Chairman. 

When the time came to select the Federalist County Chairman nominee at Koppin County’s county caucus, Jensvold nominated himself, using his 45-second speech not to persuade people into voting for him to be the Federalist County Chairman nominee, but to support his gubernatorial run. 

Shockingly, the self-nominations didn’t stop there; it happened one more time during the selection for the Federalist Party’s County Secretary and ended in a narrow vote that nearly cost him campaigning time that he would instead have to spend filing the paperwork that comes with the position of the County Secretary.

Jensvold described the play as a low-risk, high-reward situation. “I chose to make that decision because I felt it was more important to get my county on my side for the [upcoming election],” he said, explaining his thoughts in the moments preceding his nomination, going on to describe it as a campaign strategy, and a successful one at that. 

Jensvold did, however, acknowledge the foolishness of nominating himself for a second position at the County Caucus. He stated, “At first, I was thinking, ‘why not?’ But then… I realized [the person who nominated him] could be trying to vote me in as another position,” he reflected, acknowledging the small risk it posed.

By the time the end of the county caucus arrived, Jensvold—a self-described “Hungry Man” when it comes to achieving his goals—considered the strategy a large success that would go on to propel him into the position of governor, making his city proud.
