Making Every Conversation Count – Campaigning Beyond Posters

At the 88th session of American Legion Buckeye Boys State (ALBBS), campaigning is about more than just posters and speeches. For many candidates, success comes from meeting people, shaking hands, and making lasting impressions.

Maximus Deaton, of Jordan City and a candidate for governor, said personal interactions played a major role in his campaign. Deaton believes with campaigns moving quickly at ALBBS, candidates do not have enough time to build large groups of dedicated supporters. 

Instead, he said the small conversations with undecided voters often make the biggest difference. As Deaton put it, “You’re basically trying to get the people who are on the borderline. So the little conversations matter.”

Deaton said meeting delegates face-to-face helped break down assumptions people had about him. Some delegates told him they initially thought he would be unfriendly, but after talking with him one-on-one, they developed a more positive impression.

To stand out from other candidates, Deaton wore a bright purple shirt throughout the week. While he joked that many delegates knew him simply as the “purple shirt guy,” the strategy helped make him recognizable across campus.

Deaton emphasized the importance of networking and building relationships. He credited members of his county for helping him throughout the campaign process and said having friends and supporters is essential when running for office.

For delegates who may be nervous about meeting new people, Deaton encouraged them to step outside their comfort zones. He said people become better at talking to others by practicing, and that most people are much friendlier than their own doubts might suggest. “You get good at talking to people by talking to people,” he stated.

Deaton also believes personal interactions are far more effective than posters or social media. He discussed how genuine conversations allow candidates to connect with voters on a deeper level and help build trust. According to Deaton, people appreciate when someone takes the time to get to know them personally.

One of Deaton’s most memorable experiences came from a conversation with another delegate who held very different political views. Despite their disagreements, the two were able to have a respectful discussion, something Deaton greatly values.

Looking back on the week, Deaton said he entered ALBBS already planning to run for governor. Although the campaign required hard work, he said the experience was rewarding and taught him valuable networking and communication skills that he can use long after ALBBS ends.

Deaton’s experience shows that at ALBBS, the strongest campaigns are often built not only with signs or slogans, but with genuine conversations and meaningful connections.
