Unemployment Services Prove to be Vital for Delegates

On Wednesday, the unemployment services in Dorsey Hall opened for business. 

From a distance, at American Legion Buckeye Boys State (ALBBS), the election and campaign process may certainly read as intense. At all government levels, whether city, county, or state, eager candidates quickly fill roles; however, there is a fair number of delegates who lose their elections.

Often, delegates who missed the mark will have to attend the Boys State Job Fair in order to attain and maintain a career throughout the week. If the Job Fair yields no success for these delegates, the Unemployment Services, located at Dorsey Hall, is their next move. Beginning on Wednesday, the Unemployment Services opened in order to offer unemployed delegates another chance. 

For delegates like Nicholas Goulait, resident of Alberts Hall, the department has proved to be pivotal. Before coming to Boys State, he had high hopes of earning a job as the University President. Wishing to work “behind the scenes,” Goulait planned to engage directly with the Miami University president, a new, unique privilege that few attain. 

Unfortunately, Goulait did not land the position, and after an unsuccessful Job Fair excursion, he found himself at the Unemployment Services. Since Wednesday morning, however, he has successfully adopted the role of Director of Operations. 

Tasked with overseeing the state National Guard, Goulait, throughout the week, will ensure the National Guard runs smoothly and with efficiency. Thankfully, by no means is Goulait unsatisfied. In fact, he is “happy” where he ended up. Now, he works directly with individuals in the military, a fascinating opportunity for him. 

Goulait views this position as remarkably influential for himself, as the role parallels a career path he earnestly sees himself taking in the future. In fact, one of Goulait’s “top schools” is the West Point Academy in New York, a prestigious, historic university dedicated to service. 

Goulait is one prime example of the Unemployment Service’s vitality to Boys State delegates. He concurs that the department provides a valuable “second chance,” serving as a reminder that, despite any failure one may incur at Boys State, they most certainly have the chance to pick themselves up and reach for success throughout the weeklong program.
