The Quietly Brilliant Delegates of the Legislative Service Commission

Many people throughout the states are under the impression that bills are both drafted and moved along the floor by the House and the Senate alone. In reality, a third party, the Legislative Service Commission (LSC), works from the shadows to ensure the quality and correctness of proposed bills.

The LSC is an agency that aids the ALBBS General Assembly in researching for and drafting bills. While under varyingly different names, many of the fifty states have similar agencies: The Connecticut General Assembly Office of Fiscal Analysis, The Michigan Legislative Bureau, Mississippi House Legislative Services, and many, many more.

When questioned on the spot, two randomly selected delegates, Niko Davis, of Schuck City, and Robert Carabez, of Schuck City, failed to identify the LSC’s purpose, having to be informed of the work that the commission carries out. 

In an interview conducted by a Hetuck correspondent, two members of the LSC shared the valuable work they do.

“We look over bills [brought down to us by the Senate and the House], making sure the language is constitutional,” shared Braydin Henderson, a member of the LSC.

Another employee, Carson Cousino, explained that they carry out research and make sure there’re no contradictions between the proposed bills and existing ones.

“After we do that, they’ll typically draft a bill of some sort and they’ll send it to us [for review]. The senators and representatives typically do most of the bill writing,” Cousino shared.

The press was also enlightened as to the training process for delegates entering the LSC. 

“We sat down with a few members of the [American Legion], and we went through basic processes, formatting, looking over different files and stuff, examples from last year,” shared Henderson.

Without the hard work of the LSC, operations at ALBBS would not move even half as smoothly, a fact to which the LSC attests. 

“We’ve managed to keep Boys State a more [reasonable government],” said Cousino proudly.

Most importantly, the people over at the LSC enjoy the work that they do, and they deserve more recognition for their work.
