A Closet Filled With Opportunities

At American Legion Buckeye Boys State (ALBBS), leadership is about much more than holding an office or giving a speech. It is also about confidence, and sometimes confidence begins with something as simple as a clean shirt, a tie, or a well-fitting pair of pants.

The Delegate’s Closet was created several years ago when members of the counseling staff noticed that some young men arrived at ALBBS without the professional clothing needed for the week. Wanting every delegate to have the same opportunity to succeed, volunteers and supporters began donating dress shirts, ties, pants, belts, and other professional clothing items.

Today, the program is led by Melissa Fowle, the ALBBS Acting Secretary of State and past President of the ALBBS Board of Trustees. When Melissa first became involved, she quickly saw that finding clothing could be overwhelming. Items were not labeled, sizes were mixed together, and many pieces needed ironing.

Fowle stepped in and transformed the process. She sorted and labeled clothing by size, organized the room, and created a shopping experience that was easy for delegates. Her leadership helped turn a collection of donated clothing into a true resource for future leaders.

Preparation for The Delegate’s Closet begins long before the boys arrive. Melissa starts setting up on Thursday, making sure everything is organized and ready for opening day. The closet is open from Sunday through Tuesday, and she visits cities throughout the week to remind delegates that the service is available and completely free.

The Delegate’s Closet is open to everyone, not just those in need. Whether a delegate forgot a tie, ripped a pair of pants, lost a button, or spilled something on a shirt, help is available. Delegates are encouraged to take the clothing home with them, allowing them to continue using it for interviews and future opportunities.

As you walk through the cities at ALBBS and see hundreds of professionally dressed young men, it is quite possible that many of them have benefited from The Delegate’s Closet. The program has quietly helped countless delegates look and feel their best.

Charles M. McGinness from Pennell City shared that he visited The Delegate’s Closet looking for a dress shirt and found exactly what he needed. He described the process as convenient, fast, and efficient. More importantly, he felt it was a wonderful program for everyone, especially those who might otherwise be unable to afford professional clothing. He was able to receive assistance without feeling embarrassed or singled out.

His message to the generous donors who make the program possible was simple, “thank you.” He added that he hopes one day to be in a position to give back with the same generosity that was shown to him.

Fowle also provides a caring touch, helping delegates coordinate shirts, ties, belts, socks, and undershirts so they look their best. She believes that when young men feel confident in their appearance, they are better prepared to stand before a crowd, interview for a job, or lead others. As Fowle often reminds delegates, “Confidence doesn’t come from the clothes themselves—it comes from knowing you are prepared and ready to succeed.”

The Delegate’s Closet is more than a room full of clothing. It is an investment in the confidence of the next generation of leaders, ensuring that every delegate has the opportunity to present himself with pride and focus on what truly matters, developing the skills and character needed to lead.
