Friday, June 19th Press Secretary Conference

At Dorsey Hall, at around 9:30am on Friday morning, ALBBS Office of the Governor Press Secretary Benjamin O’Leary delivered a statement detailing Governor Nicholas Jenvold’s recent actions. Of the topics discussed, O’Leary brought distinct attention to the Governor’s legislative agenda, the state’s response to recent tornadoes, and the administration’s priorities moving forward.

Aiming to enhance participation, engagement, and healthy habits for American Legion Buckeye Boys State (ALBBS) delegates, addressed first was the creation of the Department of Recreation. Pursuant under the citizen initiative process available under state law, the department is intended to increase community engagement and healthy lifestyles. Recreation was noted to be “an investment in community involvement, leadership development, and citizen well-being.” Its creation perpetuated by ALBBS delegates, if enacted, the department will serve as a permanent resource. 

Furthermore, the concerns brought about by recent tornadoes were also given special attention. Recently declaring a state of emergency, Governor Jensvold has directed state resources toward rescue, recovery, and damage assessment efforts. Moreover, the National Guard has been employed; and a $100 million Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) grant has been secured in order to provide assistance to afflicted communities. Additionally, in the wake of plentiful emergency responders, law enforcement, medical personnel, public safety officials, and volunteers who have helped to mitigate the tornado’s impact, Governor Jensvold has extended his deepest gratitude.

Additionally, as for the lack of proper weather service warnings for Welsh and Konold counties, which proved to be fatal, an investigation will be conducted. Governor Jensvold has also announced he will visit the afflicted counties, providing relief and meeting with those impacted. 

The administration also remains focused on its broader agenda for the ALBBS. Top priorities consist of new employment opportunities, increasing government efficiency, responsive state agencies, and significant government transparency. 

At this time, the administration is also reviewing policies in pertinence to social media usage. In the benefit of academic and social health, the administration seeks to promote participation and healthy habits. With respect to business-related communication, potential reforms may include establishing specific times and locations for cell phone use. 

O’Leary’s final topic was related to gambling. Believing that strong communities are built upon qualities such as accountability and service, the administration has begun to examine regulations and related policies to promote responsibility, fairness, and well-being while gambling. 

Finally, before concluding,  O’Leary emphasized the administration’s strong commitment to ALBBS delegates. Following that, he pledged to continue updating the general public as decisions move forward.
