At American Legion Buckeye Boys State (ALBBS), values of leadership, respect, and responsibility are taught to the delegates throughout the program.
One of the ways that the trait of responsibility is taught is through having delegates do many of the tasks adults must do in their lives. Paying bills for utility services is one of those many duties that delegates do during the week.
“We provide the people with gas, electricity, and water. We try to provide our customers with the most we can,” said Falcon Utilities President Charles Hovey of Chapman City.
Many delegates have been stressing over the utilities recently with some being unsure about how much they must pay individually.
“We go based on what we charged previously and stay competitive with [Hamilton Utilities] and make sure everyone is getting fair rates,” said Hovey.
He also mentioned that bills late-by-a-day will have a 10% late fee to what’s already being charged, and if turned in any later, there will be consequences for citizens.
However, not everything has been going exactly smoothly for the company due to issues in getting the amount of money they want out to the counties effectively.
“Right now, we are solving communication issues with some counties,” said Hovey on the situation.

Whether it be all the way up in the state offices or in jobs that keep things running in the cities, ALBS citizens have responsibilities that are required to be taken care of.
It may be a bit stressful to pay bills for the first time, a significant responsibility for anyone as they enter their adult life, but ALBBS offers an opportunity to give it a try in a low-risk, mock setting.
