An eventful day at American Legion Buckeye Boys State (ALBBS) grew even more meaningful for the delegates during the afternoon on Wednesday as they gathered ahead of the official swearing in of their elected city, county, and state officials.
In a moment that captivated the room, Medal of Honor recipient Specialist Fourth Class Kenneth David was introduced as a guest speaker.
David, a retired U.S. Army soldier, received the Medal of Honor earlier this year for his extraordinary bravery during the Vietnam War. Originally awarded the Distinguished Service Cross, his commendation was later reviewed and upgraded. President Joe Biden presented him with the nation’s highest military honor during a ceremony at The White House on January 3, 2025.
Speaking to a packed auditorium of young leaders, David shared powerful insights drawn from his life and military service. His message was simple but striking.
“Take the words ‘can’t’ and ‘no’ out of your vocabulary,” he urged. “Learn what you can learn, because you won’t succeed if you don’t take advantage of your education.”
“Take the words ‘can’t’ and ‘no’ out of your vocabulary,” he urged. “Learn what you can learn, because you won’t succeed if you don’t take advantage of your education.”
His speech struck many delegates deeply, many of whom are preparing to be in fields of leadership, government, and public service. David’s speech gave reminders of the values of courage, perseverance, and lifelong learning that align closely with the mission of ALBBS.
As delegates prepare to step into their elected roles and shape the direction of their mock government, they do so with David’s words still echoing around campus. Delegates were inspired by the everlasting lesson from a true American hero.
