On Monday night, delegates gathered at Millett Hall to hear the inspiring words of American Legion Buckeye Boys State (ALBBS) alum Dr. Gregory Postel, who emphasized the value of hard work and perseverance. Attaining a degree in Chemistry from the College of Wooster and an additional Medical degree from Case Western University, as well as assisting as a Neuro-radiology fellow at the Mayo Clinic, he excelled in his field and stood out as a role model.

He later went on to become Interim President and Executive Vice President for Health Affairs at the University of Louisville, afterwards he served at the President of University of Toledo, currently he serves as the Executive Vice President for Health Affairs, the Christian R. Holmes Professor, and Dean of the University of Cincinnati College of Medicine.

On Monday night, The Hetuck press got the chance to interview Dr. Postel on his recent induction to the ALBBS Hall of Fame.

When you first knew you were getting inducted, what was your reaction?

“I was excited, because it brought back memories of so many years ago. I was excited to come back and see it again.”

What was the biggest challenge of your career?

“I think–constantly having to adjust to new circumstances. When you work for a long time, you see a lot. Things change and you have to be able to adapt to change, and it’s not easy.”

“I would say that if you prepare well, and if you believe in yourself, and if you’re willing to work really hard, then you’re going to be okay. Even though you may not be able to see the exact path, it will become clearer.”

What would you say to someone who is nervous about their future?

“I would say that if you prepare well, and if you believe in yourself, and if you’re willing to work really hard, then you’re going to be okay. Even though you may not be able to see the exact path, it will become clearer.”

Upon revisiting Buckeye Boys State, what is the thing you’d say changed the most?

“I don’t notice anything’s changed, it’s remarkable! You know the band, the American Legion, the brotherhood, the excitement about the elections. Everything seems remarkably similar even though it was a very long time ago.”

What has motivated you throughout your career?

“My desire to help other people. I knew that God had given me talents and I wanted to put them to good use so that I can help others.”

What is something Buckeye Boys State taught you that you’ve applied in your career?

“I would say that working as a team is always better and more effective than doing things by yourself. And you see here after just one day people are already starting to bond.”

What are three things that make a good leader?

“Someone who is honest, someone who is constantly trying to learn, and someone who knows how to inspire other people.”

Dr. Postel’s speech and the values he tried to instill in his audience exemplified the importance of dedication and how he has upheld the values of ALBBS. His induction into the ALBBS Hall of Fame reflects how he strived to help others throughout his career, as well as the lasting impact he has had on Ohio.
