National Flag Day commemorates the creation and adoption of the U.S. flag on June 14, 1777. In addition to it being Flag Day, it is also the 250th anniversary of the U.S. Army.

Yesterday The American Legion Buckeye Boys State held a “Murph” as both a tribute for the anniversary of the Army and the lieutenant it gets its name from, Lieutenant Micheal P. Murphy.

The Murph held yesterday started with meeting near Flower Hall, running to Millett Hall, and proceeding to doing 100 pull-ups or sit-ups, 200 pushups, and 300 squats.

Alexander Shininger from Peltier City, who participated in the Murph, says, “ there was a lot of pride [and that] when you have a group it’s much more rewarding and easier.”

People often come together when they are bonding over a shared experience, or in this case, the Murph. When they are finished it gives the accomplishment and pride of doing what they achieved.

Not only was the Murph for Lieutenant Murphy, it was also for those who participated to get some exercise, keep active, and build a closer bond with other delegates.

“It was fun…seeing everyone work hard… when everyone’s working hard it.. pushes me, so I just kept going,” Bren Smith from Favreau City spoke about how he felt while everyone was working out.

The Murph brought people together for the sacrifice that Lieutenant Micheal P. Murphy made for his team and for all of their families back home. In addition, it provided a stage for delegates to celebrate Flag Day, and the U.S. Army’s 250th anniversary.
