ATTENDANCE AT THE AMERICAN LEGION BUCKEYE BOYS STATE PROGRAM COULD QUALIFY YOU FOR A CHANCE AT A $20,000 SCHOLARSHIP!
In 1995, the Samsung Electronics Group in South Korea wished to do something to express the gratitude of the South Korean people to the United States and the United States military personnel who fought to maintain
the freedom of South Korea during the Korean war.
The Samsung Electronics Group looked at many national civic and fraternal organizations across the country and finally selected the American Legion as the beneficiary of a gift from the Samsung Group because of the
American Legion's ongoing commitment and programs to educate young men and women; especially the American Legion Boys State and American Legion Auxiliary Girls State programs and the status of the American
Legion as the worlds largest veterans organization.
The gift from the Samsung Electronics Group came in the form of a $5 million dollar endowment to the national American Legion headquarters to create the SAMSUNG AMERICAN LEGION SCHOLARSHIP which is offered annually
to those attending the American Legion Boys State or American Legion Auxiliary Girls State programs in their respective states.
If you are a DIRECT descendant (i.e. child, grandchild, great-grandchild) of a United States veteran who served honorably during World War I, World War II, Korea, Vietnam, Lebanon, Grenada, Panama, the Persian Gulf
War or the war in Afghanistan, or a legally adopted child of a U.S. veteran who served as shown, you may be eligible to apply for the SAMSUNG AMERICAN LEGION SCHOLARSHIP.
From a national pool of approximately 98 candidates, seven (7) to ten (10) national finalists are chosen annually and each national finalist will receive a $20,000 SAMSUNG AMERICAN LEGION SCHOLARSHIP.
In 2003, the American Legion Buckeye Boys State program was honored to have the nominee from the Ohio Boys State program into the national pool; Brett Smith from New London, Ohio selected as one of seven (7) 2003
Samsung American Legion scholarship national finalists and for his efforts, Brett Smith received a $20,000 scholarship
Since the inception of the Samsung American Legion scholarship program in 1995, two (2) young men selected out of the American Legion Buckeye Boys State program have received Samsung American Legion Scholarships.
The American Legion Buckeye Boys State program will be the only place and the only time in the state of Ohio that a young man may apply to receive the Samsung American Legion scholarship.
The official SAMSUNG AMERICAN LEGION SCHOLARSHIP application form will be mailed to each Buckeye Boys State delegate prior to their arrival at Buckeye Boys State as part of their Delegate Information Packet.
The official SAMSUNG AMERICAN LEGION SCHOLARSHIP form can also be downloaded at: http://www.legion.org/?section=community&subsection=com_edaid&subsection2=com+scholarships&con
